Summary of the September 2007 meetings of

Debenham Parish Council (PC)

Topple Testing. Some of you will be aware of the recent topple tests which have been carried out by the Parish Council in the Cemetery. The Council, as the burial authority for Debenham, has a ‘duty of care’ to carry out such tests as per Health and Safety Executive guidance, but wishes to apologise for any upset this may have caused.   The initial assessment carried out involves a hand push test and not the use of the topple tester which applies a force of 30kg to the stone. However, Council was very surprised and dismayed at the number of memorials (84) which failed this initial assessment.  Notices were placed on the memorials which failed, requesting the relatives to make contact with the Council. Members have since passed a resolution to investigate joining BRAMM (the organisation which regulates all workmanship in Cemeteries) to ensure that any future problems are minimised.

Play Areas – Upper Gardeners Road Members were disappointed to hear that, despite the strenuous efforts of the Play Area group, delays had occurred in the communication between MSDC and the developer in respect of the installation of the path, fence and gates to prevent children running out onto the road. .The suppliers of the equipment are ready to carry out the  installation but cannot proceed until the above work had been carried out. The District Councillor agreed to pursue the matter directly to aid a speedy conclusion.

Police Report  Sgt Nick Emerick informed the meeting that there had been ten recorded crimes in Debenham, including graffiti of an offensive nature, criminal damage, possible theft, underage drinking and antisocial behaviour in the vicinity of the Hoppit Woodland and Lake. Unfortunately the meeting was informed that PCSO Suzy Jessop had resigned after deciding that the job was not right for her. Interviews have already started in order to recruit another PCSO. The Speedwatch initiative is moving ahead & it is hoped to be able to commence in the near future.

Street Light Consultation – Little Back Lane  The street light attached to the rear of the Red Lion will shortly be removed due to non-compliance. In July a widely publicised consultation started, to enable  parishioners to inform  Council of their views and suggest a possible location for a replacement light for consideration at the meeting on the 15th October 07. Responses received to date are in favour of the street light being replaced. To have your view considered at the meeting please send it in writing to the Clerk

Youth Council.  The Council would like to set up a Youth Council in order to engage the views of the younger generation of our community in the ongoing management of our village. Could this be you or someone you know? If so please contact the Clerk for further information.

Surgery.  The joint Council and Police surgery will be held on Saturday 6th October 10.30am to 12.30pm in Dove Cottage. Please do pop in for a cup of tea and a chat.
