Garden Club

We have just completed our fourth full year since the Club was resurrected and we have had some very enjoyable meetings.

Over the last year these have included talks and slide shows on climbing plants, the gardens and villas of Lake Como, an amusing talk on weed control and plants for shady areas and at very short notice due to the planned speaker having died suddenly, Mr Robert Grimsey of Ashfield spoke to us about preparations for Notcutt’s entries for the Chelsea Flower show. Our outside visit last year was to the White Hall Nurseries at Worlingworth where we were made very welcome.

Our annual flower show in June last year was very successful with many fine entries of flowers and household cookery and a mini scarecrow competition for the children.  June was a little early for most vegetable classes so the flower show will be held later this year at the end of July to allow for broader and bigger vegetables (rain permitting).

The annual outing in July was to the 32 acre garden at East Ruston Old Vicarage in Norfolk with a picnic on the way at Wroxham Broad.  The gardens were varied and splendid and enjoyed by all.

In December we had our Christmas social evening, which included a photograph competition and an amusing, and slightly risqué slide show of the annual Rio carnival in Brazil.

We have a varied programme for the coming year and the annual outing will be to Kew Gardens on 23 June.

We have a good membership but the club is always open to new members – we have as yet not managed to recruit any of the industrious Debenham allotment holders into the club, nor to enter the flower show – but we hope that may change this year!!
